Massage and PRRT
September 2019

Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT) is a technique developed by John Iames M.A., P.T about 20 years ago. PRRT is based on the work of a researcher in the early 1900’s named Sir Charles Sherrington, who is also known as the Father of the Nervous System.

PRRT focuses on releasing the primal reflexes in the body. Primal reflexes are also known as “startle” or “primitive” reflexes that develop in the fetus at about 9 weeks gestation. These are the earliest “fight or flight” reflexes. PRRT attempts to down regulate these reflexes by performing a “neural reboot.”

These startle reflexes are normal and preform protective reflexes automatically and are directed by the primitive parts of the brain stem. They can become abnormally protective following a traumatic event such as a car accident or fall. They can remain switched on causing chronic pain.

PRRT attempts to reset these reflexes, soften the tissues in the region to help regain elasticity and reduce inflammation. PRRT helps provide relief from physical and emotional tension in the body.

Massage Therapy and Migraines

According to the National Headache Foundation 29.5 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are also called vascular headaches which are one of the four classifications identified by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes. The other three include contraction (muscle tension), traction and inflammatory. Stress is a major contributing factor in the triggering of migraine headaches. Certain foods, medications, skipping meals, bright lights, excessive noise, TV  and computer screens may also be triggers.

When headaches occur 3 or more times a month the NINDS recommends preventive treatments such as stress reduction, regular cardio exercise and relaxation training. It is important to make time for regular relaxation and stress management. Studies show that maintaining a regular massage therapy routine can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine headaches in as little as 1 to 2 months depending on the person and their triggers,

Make a commitment to your health and give massage therapy a chance to make your life better.
